The first few details regarding the highly anticipated next-generation PlayStation console have been released today thanks to Sony’s Mark Cerny in an interview with Wired.

Cerny confirmed that the speculated PlayStation 5 will run off entirely new state of the arts hardware. All of these upgrades will lead to the future console being the first of its kind to have ray-tracing graphics. Which means that, considering your television can support it, the PS5 will be able to run and support 8K resolution.

Sony are also looking to improve loading times. Wired describes how an early build of 2018s Spider-Man on the devkit for the PS5 has a fast-travel loading time of only 0.8 seconds in comparison to the PS4’s 15 seconds.

The biggest, and for many, most exciting feature promised is backwards compatible games. Finally. PS4 owners can rest easy knowing that their owned games will be playable on the next-gen console. Cerny noted that a lot of big games will also be released on both the PlayStation 4 its future successor.

Death Stranding fans are both giddy with excitement and incredibly exasperated with its long waits between info drops.

Such, if rumours and Cerny’s smile when asked are to be believed, will be the case for Hideo Kojima’s new title Death Stranding. Kojima and the game’s star-studded cast have been incredibly tight lipped about the project since its reveal trailer at E3 2016 and little has been shown in terms of gameplay, story and, hell, anything. The radio silence is causing many fans frustration but this information about the possibility of it launching on both PS4 and PS5 helps to narrow down the release date to some point in the next decade. The painful wait for Death Stranding will hopefully be worth it in the end. Kojima is yet to disappoint us.

Another upcoming game that’s expected by many to launch on both consoles is Naughty Dog’s sequel to the critically acclaimed The Last of Us. Thankfully for fans, the wait for this Sony exclusive doesn’t seem to be as long as Death Stranding’s, with rumours as of late claiming that the game will be released within the next year. Just like how The Last of Us was ported over from PS3 to PS4, it’s to be expected that Part 2 will follow in its predecessors’ footsteps.

The Last of Us Part 2 is perhaps the most anticipated game of this generation.

As of now, there is no release date for the future PlayStation console. Cerny was quick to confirm that the only information he can release at this very moment is that it won’t arrive in 2019. The heavily rumoured 2020 launch does seem all that more promising as the months go on.
